2009 marked the 180th anniversary of Yuengling Brewery, first opened in Pottsville, Pennsylvania in 1829. On the 100th anniversary the brewery was busy surviving prohibition, relying solely on Near beer. At the end of prohibition in 1933 the brewery celebrated by creating a new beer, Winner Beer, and shipped a truckload of it to President Franklin Roosevelt. Yuengling only distributes to 13 eastern states, citing a tradition of slow, mindful growth.




In 2001 Governor of West Virginia, Bob Wise, launched the slots-in-bars initiative, allowing most establishments with a liquor license to install five video lottery machines. Since then gambling revenue has stimulated the economy on West Virginia, which has the second lowest median income per household in the United States. However a divide remains between those who believe the machines have improved life and those who feel their communities have lost a bit of their souls.
